Enterprise Collaboration Vendors I’m Currently Tracking

January 7 2012 01:30:27 PM Add/Read Comments [18]
The following lists are sorted alphabetically, not by my ranking. Several could be placed in more than one column. Not all are publically available yet.

Update Jan 9: I'm getting flooded with comments/questions on these lists so I thought I should provide a little more context. I am interested in more than just a company's product. To be successful vendors need an experienced senior leadership team, a capable support infrastructure, a knowledgeable sales team, a list of large customer references, a strong marketing presence at events/online, a growing partner ecosystem and they should be showing up in customer requests for vendors evaluations. Not all the companies below meet all these criteria and may be removed, some may be moved between columns and I am sure there are more that need adding.

Who's missing?

    I guess it depends on what you mean by collaboration vendors.

    I see an awful lot of collaboration getting done on Lotus Notes / Domino. Are you looking at the items on your lists as out of the box solutions or as collaboration platforms ?

    I see Notes / Domino as a collaboration platform. I can see that sharepoint could be seen more as an out of the box solution in that sense - but that also means it is more limited.

    There would be those that would shout Quickr but I am not as familiar with it.

    If Notes was from a new startup ( rather than being 20 years old ) and IRIS had never developed it would it not be on your list ?

    >Code once for web and disconnected browser ( how many times has that been promised )

    >Relatively quick application development

    >Good frameworks fo mobilizing apps ( admittedly not as native apps )

    >A strong Open Source community

    >Rapidly developing APIs for integration to cloud stuff

    >Robust Security

    >Strong integration of mail, applications, IM and in some cases telephony

    >Strong backward compatibility and version - version robustness

    >NoSQL

    >Distributed data

    >Runs on most operating systems

    >Clients for mac, windows and linux

    I'm not sure what your criteria is or where this particular product may fit in but there's a local startup called Speechbobble. { Link }

    I stumbled across this one when looking for the Unison sync tool. { Link }

    You have a good list up there, but here is an Ontario based startup gaining momentum with productivity, collaboration & knowledge management for SMEs - Tabillo - www.tabillo.com

    Kurt/Amit, thank you for the additions. Especially since they are Canadian.

    Michael, thank you for the suggestion. There are hundreds of vendors doing stream/twitter clones but I've tried to restrict my list to ones that I believe are truly enterprise contenders. That means they have a large development team, experienced senior leadership, a capable support infrastructure in place, a knowledgeable sales team, a good list of large customer references, a marketing presence at events/online, they are asked about by potential customers, etc.

    I would include Exact Software's Synergy in 'Getting Work Done' category. Debate? ;-P

    Sean, Notes is pretty hard thing for me to pitch these days, but I will mention it in my section on IBM.

    Kelly, I've never had them come up in a conversation. They appear to be an entire suite of business applications for SMB.

    Alan, I wan't thinking you were pitching any of them !

    Seriously though, you have a perspective on the outside world and a knowledge of the yellow bubble that is pretty unusual. You also seem to call a spade a spade.

    There are many people that would be interested in your views on where Notes / XPages sits and why people find it hard to pitch or maybe just think of as a modern solution.

    I wouldn't dispute that Notes is a "hard pitch" and has an image as "old" but recently in particular it does feel ( from inside the yellow bubble ) that it has a lot to offer - I am honestly intrigued as to how it compares with its peers - perhaps that's a good place to start - what are its peers ? I would love to know how other people are developing and delivering collaborative solutions - my own particular interest being structured collaboration ( holiday requests, management of change etc.. ) rather than unstructured or spontaneous collaboration via Google docs etc..

    You were recently asking for examples for people ( I felt bad about not getting around to responding ) - did you get much response and how did it break out ?

    Cheers, Sean

    Hey Alan,

    I wasn't able to figure out the parameters you used for "Enterprise Social Software Platforms" and "Getting Work Done". I wanted to draw your attention to Qontext - www.qontext.com - that has functionalities to qualify it for both headers.

    It would be great if you could include Qontext to your list. They meet all your criteria re:experienced senior leadership team, a capable support infrastructure, a knowledgeable sales team et al. I would be happy to take you through its features so that you know where to slot us.

    Best regards

    Aditya

    A similar list was put together here { Link } - you might see some additions to your list there ... not least ourselves who I believe fulfil the criteria you described in the opening paragraph.

    Regards

    Alan, adding Jam from SuccessFactors to your list. Jam is a combination of CubeTree and Jambok, both purchased by SFSF last year. With Jam we focus on social learning/collaboration, accelerating ee time to productivity with a smooth onboarding process, and providing access to experts through private, public, and cross-company communities. Easy video and screen captures are a big feature of Jam.

    Quick YouTube video here -->> { Link }

    Since SFSF is now an SAP company, there is also StreamWork, which as you know has a great set of "getting work done" tools. Will be interesting to see how/if/when the two products come together. Thanks.

    Alan, impressive list ! Guess that some fights will go on there ...

    Missing: what innovation platform and more specific ideation is concerned, there is one missing: CogniStreamer (www.cognistreamer.com ).

    Hello,

    I work for Knowledge Plaza, specialized in Social KM, and talkSpirit. I think you should take a look at both of them. But of course I'm not objective :-)
