Lately my Macbook Pro has been running BURNING hot. I don't mean, "Ah neat my laptop is a little warm", I mean "Ouch, crap that hurts to touch" hot. I don't have it flat on my desk, I have it elevated on a stand to help air circulation.

I went to the Apple store (without my Macbook, silly move, but it was an unplanned stop) and the staff member that helped me suggested I update my EFI Firmware. He said the EFI app would be in the Utilities folder, which it is not. The funny part is, I asked him to show me on a Macbook Pro in the store, but none of them had it installed either! He also said not to bother with any of the new laptop cooling fans, such as the Targus Chill Hub that I was looking at.

Going to the Apple Support forum I found this technote: MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.5.1. It does not mention anything about helping with the heat problem, it just says "This update fixes several issues to improve the stability of MacBook Pro computers." (and people make fun of IBM technotes!)

There are a few things I don't understand:
1. What is EFI?
2. Why does it need a separate installer versus the standard Software Update utility? (don't tell me it doesn't, or else why would Apple make this?)
3. The technote says "After the firmware is successfully applied to your Mac, your Boot ROM Version will be MBP31.0070.B07, but mine is already MBP41.00C1.B03. I assume 41 is newer than 31. So should I still try the firmware update?

I'm confused, and sweating, as my Macbook is heating my apartment ;-)

Calling on my Mac friends again!

For the most part, my life is pretty routine. That is why it is so much fun when a new experience comes along. This weekend, I flew in a four seater plane for the first time, going from Boston to Cooperstown, NY. My friend Sasha (in the middle) is a pilot for private planes, and occasionally plays ultimate with my team. Since he was playing with us this weekend, he offered to fly a few people to the tournament. Who am I at turn down an offer to skip a 4-5 hour drive!

We were only allowed to bring 20 pounds each onboard. I guess we had to make up for Adam, the giant on the left! We had gorgeous weather, and the flight was incredibly smooth. Well, expect for when we were doing 2G 60 degree turns, and zero G dives! We had to have some fun up there right!

We arrived early, so we flew over the fields we were playing at, and the brewery where we were camping. Then we landed at this little municipal air strip. I learned about preflight checklists, post-flight tasks, filling the gas, pushing the plane into the hangar, what the talk between the pilots and the tower means, and a bunch of other things.

<img alt="Image:Roger, Roger.
This past weekend my ultimate frisbee team won our summer league finals. It was awesome! We played 8 games over 2 days. It was an incredible team effort, with everyone on the team giving everything they had. I wonder if my teammates are hurting as much as I am today. Nah, I'm old! While my game is based more on experience and consistency than speed and height, it is still nice to be able to contribute at this high of a level. There are some amazing superstars on my team, and everyone is such a pleasure to play with. I love my team! Our competition was excellent, both in skill and in spirit, which made for a hell of a fun weekend. If you've never played or watched ultimate, I suggest you look into leagues in your city.
